Notes

  • The Saber Tiger is the Zoid that set the precedent followed by Zoids such as the Dimetrodon and Seismosaurus in simply being named after the animal it's based on; in Japan, the Smilodon is referred to as "Saber Tiger." This tends to be lost on Western viewers, where the common term is "Saber Toothed Tiger" (or the more scientifically correct "Saber Toothed Cat.")
  • Raven's sadism is on display for the first time in this episode. In real life, soldiers are trained to aim towards the center of mass on a target, since headshots and the like are a more difficult target. Raven kills two Republican soldiers by shooting out their cockpits, going out of his way to choose a less efficient method of dispatching the enemy just to inflict more pain and suffering than necessary. This starkly contrasts with his portrayal in the manga, where Raven is only interested in killing Zoids and spares their pilot's lives when he can. This may have been a choice on the anime writers' part to make Raven seem more evil, though it makes his eventual redemption that much harder to swallow.
