'''The Young Man Of Planet Zi''' is the first chapter of the [[Zoids: Chaotic Century (Manga)|Zoids: Chaotic Century]] manga. In this chapter, Van Flyheight explores some mysterious ruins while evading a wild Zoid.

==Plot Summary==

In the [[Elima Desert]], a teenage boy by the name of Van Flyheight is being chased by a [[Guysack]] while out riding his [[hoverboard]]. Figuring he won't be able to outrun it, Van spots ancient ruins up ahead and heads for cover, using his hoverboard to leap and avoid the Guysack's tail strike. The hoverboard keeps going on its own, pulling Van behind him by its support cord, all the way to the top of the ruins, though his hoverboard is wrecked in the process. After striking the ruins with its tail, the Guysack gives up and scurries away. While searching for parts to repair his board, Van notices a secret room, which broke open during the attack. The power is still on, and after turning on the lights, Van discovers two capsules...

Back at the villiage, Van's older sister Maria is searching for him, when she is greeted by Reverend Leon in the town's cemetary. The Reverend surmises that Van has gone off to explore the ruins. The Reverend shows her the flowers left by a grave, and Maria deduces that Van recalls that it was the anniversary of their [[Dan Flyheight (Chaotic Century Manga)|father]]'s death, who was killed in battle ten years prior while trying to defend the village from an attack. Maria notes that ever since then, Van has vowed to find a Zoid of his own so he could become a great Zoid pilot like him. Maria asks the Reverend if a Zoid would even listen to Van, and he guesses that it would depend on how sincere he was about it.

Back at the ruins, Van looks inside one of the pods, and while examining it, accidentally presses a switch that causes it to hatch out a small Zoid which resembles a human-sized dinosaur. As Van gushes over the newborn Zoid, it wakes up, gets to its feet and tries to scare him away with a roar. Instead, he approaches it, and gets tailwhipped upside the face for his trouble. Van is unpeturbed, and impressed by the Zoid's spunk, while the Zoid in turn is impressed by Van's unconditional kindness.

Suddenly, the Guysack returns, and attacks. Van lunges at the Guysack, electrocuting it with a cable to give the small Zoid time to escape. The Guysack swats Van aside, breaking his arm, and the small Zoid leaps to his defence. The small Zoid attempts to fight the Guysack, but it's no match for it, and gets thrown into a nearby wall. Van begs the small Zoid to run away, as he can't bear to see it be killed trying to protect him like his father was. The small Zoid's body opens up, wrapping Van with wires, and they merge together. Thrusters unfold from the small Zoid's body and it rockets foreward, ramming through the Guysack with tremendous force, destroying it and escaping the ruins. The small Zoid's body opens up and releases Van, his injuries from earlier healed. Van adopts the small Zoid and names it "Zeke", after the [[Zeke (Command Wolf)|Zoid]] his father used to pilot.

Meanwhile, a [[Raven (Chaotic Century Manga)|mysterious figure]] and his [[Shadow (Chaotic Century Manga)|Zoid]] observe the pair from afar...
