'''Filler Episodes''' are episodes in an anime series which do not significantly contribute to the character or story development of the series as a whole.

Television production in Japan is different from that of the United States; there are no breaks between "seasons" and there are no reruns. New episodes are produced continuously until the show is cancelled or meets a pre-determined quota. This can be a problem for longer series (generally those within the 50+ episode range), as there's generally not enough plot to go around, requiring certain episodes to be made for the sake of padding out the episode count. In anime series that are adapted from contemporary manga, such as ''Dragon Ball Z'', filler episodes also serve the purpose of stalling for time to keep the anime from overtaking the manga. Filler is usually less of a problem in shorter anime (in the 12-26 episode range), since a story can be more easily condensed within a shorter series rather than being forced to be spread thin across hundreds of episodes.

"Filler" is often used as a dirty word within the anime fan community for "low quality episode that doesn't advance the story".
