Like an unbroken horse, the Liger Zero is wild, stubborn and tempermental, exhibiting a personality which marks it as a free spirit. It wouldn't allow anybody to pilot it, going berserk the moment someone set foot in the cockpit, and thus it was written off as a worthless novelty. Only a warrior that it deemed worthy could ride it, and it found one in [[Bit Cloud (New Century Anime)|Bit Cloud]], who was the first person to recognise its potential and treat it with respect as an equal, rather than simply as a defective machine. It is shown to be more intelligent and expressive than most other Zoids, understanding what Bit tells it, appearing to converse with him and even displaying a rudimentary sense of humour. Though not always agreeing with what he wanted it to do, the Liger Zero is loyal to Bit, even if a warrior with greater skill and experience than him tries to pilot it. Together, Bit and the Liger form a close bond and become a nigh unbeatable duo.

The Liger Zero is a powerful Zoid, with its basic capabilities surpassing those of the Blade Liger. It excels at close combat with its [[Strike Laser Claw]], its signature attack, which channels a golden, plasma-like energy into its claws, enhancing them with enough raw cutting power to dispatch most opponents with a single swipe. Although it lacked ranged weaponry at first, Bit corrected this problem by installing a modified [[Shock Cannon]] that he <s>stole</s> "liberated" from an opponent's [[Saber Tiger]]. It's extremely agile, capable of dodging shots fired at it from point blank range, and can run at speeds exceeding 200kph thanks to the pair of ion boosters on its back and anti-lift stabilizers on its flanks. Though lacking the [[E-Shield]] of the Shield Liger and Blade Liger, it compensates with incredibly durable armour, capable of withstanding intense heat from gas-powered flames without damage. As an [[Ultimate X]] Zoid, it can rapidly adapt to changing combat conditions.

To expand its options in battle, the Liger Zero can utilise the Changing Armour System to swap out its armour for any of the three optional sets of custom battle armour designed by the Doc, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. These transformations are the [[Liger Zero Jäger (New Century Anime)|Jäger]], designed for speed and mobility, the [[Liger Zero Schneider (New Century Anime)|Schneider]], designed for close combat, and the [[Liger Zero Panzer (New Century Anime)|Panzer]], designed for heavy assaults. Compared to its CAS counterparts, the Liger Zero still has a number of advantages; it is the most practical and well rounded form, with greater physical strength, firepower and protection than the Jäger, superior durability and ranged capability to the Schneider, and better mobility and close combat skill than the Panzer. Of all the variations, Bit used the standard armour most often in battle.
