Mary Sue

A Mary Sue is a pejorative name for a certain type of character.

Overview
Coined by Paula Smith in 1973 in her satirical Star Trek fanfic A Trekkie's Tale, the term "Mary Sue" has come to be used for an over-the-top badly written character that has broken the suspension of disbelief of a story to its detriment. The archetypical Mary Sue character is shallow and static, highly idealized, does not react to their situation in a way that makes narrative or psychological sense, and has traits and abilities that are jarring, out of place, or excessive in the larger context of the story's internal rules and logic. What exactly constitutes as "over-the-top" or "out of place" will of course vary from one setting to the next: a New Century Sue, for instance, might be an attractive, intelligent, charismatic prodigy Zoid Warrior with a custom Ultimate X König Wolf, an Organoid, "cool" anachronistic weapons and a gratuitous tragic backstory, who can beat Bit and Vega at the same time with their eyes closed, hogs the spotlight and takes agency away from the canon characters, reducing them to jobbers, worshippers or love interests.

Minutia
Most would agree on the broad definition outlined in the above section, but much controversy exists over the subjective finer details. The term "Mary Sue" is generally used among the fanfiction and RPG crowd, and some purists will insist the term only applies to fanfic and RP: others will argue the term applies to original fiction as well, pointing to characters such as Twilight's Bella Swan, Star Trek's Wesley Crusher or Venus from Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation as examples of Canon Sues. Mary Sues are often (but not always) surrogates for the author, and may share their personality, interests, political views, religious affiliation, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Anti-Sues are the extreme opposite of a typical Mary Sue; too flawed to be interesting instead of being too perfect, but still the recipient of undue focus.

A male Sue can be referred to as a Gary Stu or Marty Stu, and although they certainly exist there is a regrettable tendency for them to not be criticized as harshly or as often as their female counterparts. This has led to some defending Mary Sue characters as feminist and progressive. However, the backlash against Sues/Stus goes beyond the mere criticism of power fantasies and wish fulfilment. Sues/Stus are regressive more often than not, and actually cause real harm by perpetuating unreasonable, contradictory standards expected of women; toxic masculinity; cultural appropriation; and making light of abuse and mental illness, borrowing these traits as mere props to make the author's character seem more "special" or "edgy."

Analysis
"Mary Sue" can be a loaded word: beware of those who use it as a shorthand for "any character I don't like who I think is too powerful or important." There is nothing inherently wrong with escapism or catharsis in fiction. Mary Sue is not a list of character traits: it is the disease, not the symptoms, and a character can have some Sue-like traits without necessarily being a Sue.

For example, Bit is coddled by the plot and has a special Zoid, but these traits are balanced out by his legitimate character flaws. Bit takes things for granted, is arrogant and impulsive, and a petty criminal to boot; more importantly, the story casts these traits in a negative light, rather than using them as "fake" flaws just to make Bit look cool. The crux of the story hinges on Bit being confronted with his hubris and learning from it. Bit is frequently the butt of insults and slapstick comedy at his expense and the viewer is invited to laugh at Bit rather than with him. Bit does not stand on a pedestal above the rest of the characters: he's powerful but far from perfect, which humanizes him and makes him a relatable character.

Van Flyheight during Guardian Force is arguably a Canon Stu. Van transforms from a balanced character similar to Bit, to a mature, disciplined super-soldier with all the development leading up to this happening off-screen between episodes 34 and 35. Guardian Force Van is a paragon of idealized masculinity: physically fit, an excellent fighter in and out of the cockpit, a celebrated hero and an inspirational leader hyped up by allies and villains alike (except for those who only exist to make him look better). Episode 52 is the closest the series comes to giving him an actual character flaw but quickly drops it in favour of making him more powerful.

Overview
The Wild Liger is a relatively small Liger type Zoid. Known colloquially as "the King of Zoids", it exhibits a proud and temperamental personality fitting of its title. Though grateful towards Arashi for rescuing it from the clutches of the Death Metal Empire, it has little patience for the bumbling antics of its partner, and will buck him off its back or bat him around when he's being particularly stupid or pig-headed.

Lacking any sort of ranged weapons, the Wild Liger excels in close range combat with an array of blades on its shoulders, which can be deployed as a single giant "claw" to slash at opponents and parry melee attacks. Its Wild Blast technique, "King of Claw", is activated by its Zoid Key, powering it up with a electrical blue aura, but overreliance on this ability will exhaust both the Liger and its rider. It demonstrates astounding agility, effortlessly able to flip itself in midair and land on its feet with catlike reflexes.
Zoids: New Century is the second Zoids anime series (following Zoids: Chaotic Century.) Referred to in Japan as ゾイド新世紀／ゼロ (Zoido Shinseiki/Zero, or Zoids: New Century/Zero), it was the first of the Zoids anime to be broadcast in the West, where it was simply titled "Zoids", but later rebranded as "Zoids: New Century" by Viz and Magna Pacific. Combining the trappings of the super robot genre with fighting tournament/sports anime, Zoids: New Century basically plays out like a wacky sitcom about giant robot pilots. It has a lighter tone and forgoes the previous series' extended story arc structure in favour of self-contained stories featuring outlandish character-based humour, linked together into shorter story arcs. Though it is not a sequel to Chaotic Century, a number of shared concepts and settings confirm it is part of the same continuity. It also has a (very loose) manga adaptation.

Overview
Hundreds of years after the events of Zoids: Chaotic Century, a new story begins. Zoids are no longer used for war, but instead in Zoid battling competitions sanctioned by the Zoids Battle Commission (or ZBC) and fought between professional Zoid Warriors for glory and prize money. The primary story arcs of the series concern the paralell growth of the Blitz team, a ragtag group of low-ranking Zoid Warriors, and a sinister organized crime syndicate known as the Backdraft Group. Both sides ambitiously claw their way to greatness from minor origins, tied together by the mystery of the Ultimate X.

Plot Summary
Proving their Worth
One day, a young junk dealer named Bit Cloud is searching the wastelands for parts to build himself the ultimate Zoid partner. This all changes when he interrupts a battle between the Blitz team and the Tigers team, where he accidentally causes the Blitz team's Shield Liger to trip over his truck, injuring it. The presence of unauthorised personnel on the battlefield causes the battle to be cancelled. Bit follows the Blitz team back to their base, where he is introduced to Leena, Brad, Jamie, Leon and Steve. He also meets the Liger Zero, a unique Zoid that nobody can pilot. During the night, the Liger Zero awakens and allows Bit into its cockpit. Bit is unable to control the Zoid at first and it runs off into the night, causing the Blitz team to believe he had stolen it. After calming the Zoid down, Bit returns and assists the Blitz team in a rematch against the Tigers team. With Bit's help, the Blitz team is victorious, and because he's the only one who can pilot the Liger Zero, he is invited to join the team.

Bit subsequently proves himself a valuable asset to the Blitz team by helping them to defeat various formidable opponents, such as Naomi Fluegel and Harry Champ, and Leon leaves the Blitz team, confident that Bit can take his place. One day, Leena is kidnapped by the Backdraft Group, a mysterious organization who hold high risk, unsanctioned Zoid battles with no rules. The Backdraft use Leena to force the Blitz team to participate in an unsanctioned battle. The Blitz team win the battle, and Leena is able to escape.

New Toys
Eventually, Steve builds a trio of custom armour sets for the Liger Zero: the Jager, Schneider and Panzer. Bit uses the Jager in battle for the first time against Jack Cisco, a mercenary who pilots a Lightning Saix, in a rematch with the Champ Team. The Backdraft returns and destroys the Blitz team's Dibison using their most powerful Zoid: the Elephander. The Backdraft forces the Blitz team into battle against the Elephander, who are able to defeat it with the Jager. While picking up a special custom Gun Sniper to replace their Dibison, the Blitz team joins Naomi Fluegel to defeat a gang of Sinker piloting hooligans called the Sand Stingray Gang. The Blitz team are challenged to a rematch against the Tigers Team, who are assisted by a weather-controlling device built by Dr. Laon, an old enemy of Steve Toros. The Blitz team are able to defeat the Tigers team using the Schneider armour, and Dr. Laon swears revenge. The Blitz team are then challenged to a Zoid battle by Harry's older sister Mary, with the Liger Zero going to the victor. Using the Schneider, the Blitz team are able to defeat the Champ team and keep the Liger Zero.

A Wakeup Call for the Blitz Team
The Blitz team's various victories have caught the attention of Altile, a high-ranking member of the Backdraft group, who believes the Liger Zero to be the legendary Ultimate X Zoid. To confirm his suspicions, he sends his elite War Shark pilots, the Fuma team, to attack the Blitz team, who are defeated by the Jager. Later, Jack Cisco, who has joined up with Chris and Kelly Tasker of the Lightning team, challenges the Blitz team to a rematch. Using a special drafting manoeuvre, the Lightning team are able to defeat the Blitz team, and Bit vows to take Zoid battles more seriously. Late one night, the Backdraft group break into the Blitz team's hangar with their new Zabat Zoids, shooting down the Blitz team's Pteras and stealing the Liger Zero. While out searching for the Liger Zero, Bit is kidnapped by the Backdraft group, and Altile tries to persuade him to join their organization. Bit refuses, and is forced into a rematch with the Elephander, this time piloted by Stoller, one of the Backdraft's elite warriors. The Blitz team arrives and Bit is able to escape, and using the Schneider, fights the Elephander to a stalemate. In retaliation, the Zoid Battle Commission enlists the Blitz team to help them bust the Backdraft group. Jamie learns to pilot his new Zoid, the Raynos, by tapping into his alter ego, The Wild Eagle, defeating the Backdraft's Zabat fleet singlehandedly.

Rivals Unite
Following this event, Leena is stalked online by The Chainsaw Man, who threatens to chop her Zoid to pieces. With Naomi's help, the Blitz team are able to solve the mystery of the Chainsaw Man, who turns out to be nothing but a gang of thieves piloting Spino Sappers. Later, Dr. Laon returns, attacking the Blitz team with his custom Whale King, equipped with an anti-gravity device. With help from the Tigers team, the Blitz team are able to use the Hovercargo's catapult to launch the Schneider through the Whale King. One day, Leon returns, having acquired a Red Blade Liger and joined the Fluegel team. Bit and Leon fight to a stalemate, and join forces when the Backdraft interrupts their battle. Dr. Laon joins the Backdraft Group, and challenges the Blitz team to another rematch, this time against his custom Storm Sworders, which the Blitz team's Raynos and Gun Sniper are able to defeat. When Harry's robot, Benjamin, falls in love with a ZBC Judge Robot, Bit offers to help Benjamin find his true love.

The Escalating Backdraft Threat
Stoller hijacks a Whale King and leaves the Backdraft group, taking the Elephander with him, to challenge Bit to a legitimate rematch. With its new upgrades, the Elephander is too powerful for Bit to defeat using the Schneider or the Jager, and equips the Panzer armour for the first time. The battle is interrupted by the Backdraft, who attack with their Zabats, seeking vengance. The Elephander is shot down and the Backdraft are driven away by Bit and the Panzer, ending the battle in a draw. Later, Brad searches Mount Iselina for a mysterious Zoid he claims to have seen there. In the process his Command Wolf is destroyed and he is kidnapped by Dr. Laon, who built the mysterious Zoid: the Shadow Fox. Dr. Laon tries to convince Brad to join the Backdraft in exchange for the Shadow Fox. Brad agrees, but then rejoins the Blitz team. Dr. Laon challenges the Blitz team to yet another battle, this time with the Fuma Team under his command, with upgraded War Sharks. When the Shadow Fox defeats the War Sharks with a Buster Cannon upgrade, Dr. Laon takes Harry hostage with the Fuma team's Hammerhead, but Leena opens fire with her Gun Sniper anyway, shooting it down, though Harry survives.

After losing the Elephander and the Shadow Fox, and failing to procure the Liger Zero for the Backdraft, Altile becomes convinced they must obtain an Ultimate X of their own, and leads an archaeological expedition to find one. The Blitz team takes a vacation at the beach, and are joined by Harry. They're attacked by the Backdraft, who are digging nearby. The Blitz and Champ teams join forces and retaliate, but the Backdraft escape with their prize: the Berserk Fury, an Ultimate X Zoid like the Liger Zero. Altile hands the Zoid over to Vega Obscura, a child prodigy and the king of unsanctioned battles, and his manager, a cunning and ambitious woman named Sarah. They test the Berserk Fury out by interrupting a rematch between the Blitz and Lightning teams. Vega and the Fury are able to defeat the Lightning and Blitz team easily, but Sarah orders Vega to retreat before he can finish them off.

The Royal Cup
Eventually, the Zoid Battle Commission holds The Royal Cup, a tournament held every four years, which all the ZBC's Class A teams are permitted to enter, with the champions entering the prestigious Class S. Among the teams entering are the Blitz, Lightning, Champ, Tigers, Fluegel and Vega teams. The Backdraft attempts to stage a coup of the Zoid Battle Commission, led by Sarah, using a Death Stinger's Charged Particle Cannon to shoot down the ZBC's Judge Satellites, while Vega and the Berserk Fury pick off all the teams on the ground. Altile attempts to take over the Backdraft using the Fuma team and three Geno Saurers to defeat the Fury, but he fails and is disbarred. Meanwhile, the Blitz team settles their scores with the Lightning, Tigers and Fluegel teams, and Dr. Laon, injured in a rematch with the Blitz team, reveals to them the secret of the Ultimate X.

Having collected the data they need to find the Royal Cup's hidden finish line, the Blitz team heads for it, but waiting there for them are Vega and the Berserk Fury. A long and ferocious battle ensues, during which the Fury defeats the Panzer and destroys the Shadow Fox. When Bit and the Liger head to the Hovercargo to re-arm, the Fury opens fire on the transport; however, the Hovercargo deploys its shield, surviving the blast, and the Liger Zero returns to the battle, equipped with its original armour. Bit and the Liger fight valiantly against Vega and the Fury. Bit and the Liger have their opponents on the ropes, and during the melee, Vega is knocked unconscious. The Fury goes out of control and sweeps its charged particle beam around the battlefield, shooting down the Backdraft's Whale King, but with an expertly-timed lunge, Bit is able to use the Liger Zero's Strike Laser Claw to redirect the Fury's beam into the sky. Vega regains consciousness and escapes just before the Fury finally succumbs to the Liger's attack.

The Zoid Battle Commission apprehend the Backdraft Group and the Blitz team wins the Royal Cup, ascending to Class S. To celebrate their victory, Bit and the Liger go on a vacation.

Production
Zoids: New Century premiered in Japan on January 6th, 2001, just three weeks after the end of Zoids: Chaotic Century. Much of the production crew from Chaotic Century were also involved with New Century, including director Takao Kato, writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa, and animation directors Taro Ikegami and Akira Takahashi. The same studios, Xebec and Digital Frontier, handled the traditional and CG animation, respectively. It displays an enormous increase in the quality of the computer animation from the previous series, which Digital Frontier even received an award for in 2001. The Zoids have smoother run cycles, weightier, more solid movements, and are much more expressive in their body language, in many cases reflecting the emotional state of their pilots. The series was scored by Kow Otani, who had composed music for other anime (Future GPX Cyber Formula, Outlaw Star and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing), as well as live-action tokusatsu films (the 90s Gamera Trilogy and Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack.)

The series was dubbed into english by the prolific Canadian production company, "The Ocean Group", whose other projects include the early seasons of Dragon Ball Z, various Gundam series, InuYasha, and Black Lagoon. English anime dubs from the late 90s and early 2000s were often heavily censored, rewritten, and poorly directed or acted (such as in Sailor Moon, Pokémon and the aforementioned Dragon Ball Z.) Aside from some liberties taken for the sake of localization and matching the mouth-flaps, New Century's english dub is a generally faithful adaptation of the original Japanese script and features solid voice acting to boot, though a handful of episodes do feature censorship. While the first three Zoids anime were dubbed in Canada, New Century was the only one to be broadcast on Canadian television.
US/Canada
The entirety of Zoids: New Century was released on DVD and VHS by Viz Video and Geneon (formerly Pioneer Entertainment) in 2002-2003, under the title "Zoids". Each volume contained four episodes, except for the last two, which contained five. Some versions of the discs included special limited-edition holographic Zoid stickers, which featured the Liger Zero, Shadow Fox, Dark Horn, Lightning Saix and Berserk Fury. Now out of print, these DVDs have become rare and are often sold for ridiculously high prices online. The DVD volumes were as follows:
Four episodes of Zoids: New Century were also released by Hasbro for their VideoNow player on black and white PVD discs. Episode 23 was released on a single disc under the title "Zoids: Awakening Dragon". The Royal Cup trilogy was also released in a special 3 Pack, under the titles "Festival of Brave Men", "Survival" and "Track of Zero".
Australia/New Zealand
Zoids: New Century was released in Australia and New Zealand on DVD in 2003 by Magna Pacific, this time under the title "Zoids: New Century". Six volumes were released, as well as a compilation box set. Like the Geneon release, volumes 1-4 each contained four episodes, while volumes 5-6 each contained five episodes.

Response
Although it was heavily promoted, Zoids: New Century was not a commercial success in Japan. The show received low ratings compared to the early episodes of Chaotic Century and it had a comparatively short run of 26 episodes. New Century got a second lease on life when it was aired in North America on Cartoon Network (US) and YTV (Canada), where it was more warmly recieved and had modest ratings. The success of the New Century anime helped to launch Hasbro’s Zoids model line, creating a market for Zoids in the West and prompting the release of Zoids: Chaotic Century and, later, Zoids: Fuzors.

Opinions on New Century in the early days of the english-speaking Zoids anime fandom shifted after the release of Chaotic Century, with fans comparing the former unfavourably to the latter, criticizing New Century for having a (percieved) lack of a plot or character development. Fans of New Century in turn cited the show’s strong character dynamic, its humour and the quality of its animation over Chaotic Century. The final battle between the Liger Zero and the Berserk Fury in particular has been praised, and is often regarded by fans as the most gorgeously animated sequence in the entirety of the Zoids anime produced before or since.

The Chaotic Century vs. New Century debate mostly fizzled out after both factions turned their ire towards Fuzors. Since then, Zoids: New Century has become highly regarded in the modern Zoids fandom, enjoying a lofty status through virtue of rose-tinted nostalgia. The Liger Zero was ranked as #13 on "The Top 20 Greatest Giant Robots," an episode of the web series Anime Abandon. This reversal has been reflected to a certain extent in the Japanese fandom, with many New Century Zoid variants being included in Kotobukiya’s High End Master Model line, complete with accessories tying them to the anime, such as pilot figures of the characters.
Overview
Designed for reconniasance and spying missions, the Helcat is the quintissential stealth-type Zoid, albiet not the best one around. Fast and light on its feet, it's equipped with a Stealth Shield that renders it invisible to the naked eye, though it can still be detected on radar or through thermal imaging. Due to its small size and light armour, the Helcat tends to avoid direct confrontations, hunting in groups and using its asssortment of back and chest mounted cannons to weapons to chip away at its victims from a safe distance.

Zoids: Wild features an all new generation of Zoids. Much smaller than previous Zoid types, they have a more organic styling and are ridden rather than piloted. (A similar precedent can be seen in Command Zoids, and small-scale Zoids such as the Saber Lion and Diloforce.)
Production
In response to poor toy sales for Zoids: Genesis, the Zoids franchise went into remission and was kept on life support by various lowkey toy releases and media projects such as Kotobukiya's High End Master Model line, Rebirth Century, Zoids: SS, and Zoids: Field of Rebellion. Twelve years later, Takara Tomy announced a revival of the Zoids franchise, featuring an all new line of motorized model kits along with a tie-in anime, manga, apps and a video game for the Nintendo Switch. The Zoids: Wild anime will debut in Japan in the summer of 2018, with a global launch occurring sometime after.
Developed as a successor to the Geno Saurer to fight the Death Stinger, it was the first Zoid to utilise the experimental buster claw technology, which was developed from the magnezer drills salvaged from a damaged Mad Thunder from the old wars. The Geno Buster was the Empire's most advanced Zoid of the time. However, it never saw active combat duty because its Zoid Core and pilot could not handle the extreme stresses put on them by the Geno Buster's high performance, and further development on it was halted. The ground-breaking technology invented during its construction would eventually be refined and used for both the Geno Breaker and the Berserk Fury.
The Berserk Fury is a Zoid which appears in the Battle Story.

Overview
The personal Zoid of Wolff Muroa, the Berserk Fury is the ultimate result of weapons technology (courtesy of the Geno Buster) combined with the chassis of the Proto Rex. Infused with the vitality of a Wild Purebred T-Rex, it has extremely keen fighting instincts and forms a bond with its pilot that grants it extraordinary raw power and response time, resulting in a Zoid which surpasses its predecessor, the Geno Breaker. Its unique armaments, the Buster Claws, combine an E-Shield with a magnetic plasma cannon and a magnezer drill, making highly versatile in regards to defence, ranged firepower and close combat ability. Developed by the Guylos Empire in tandem with the Liger Zero, both were designed to make use of the Changing Armour System to further expand their options in combat, though only one optional set of battle armour, the Sturm Fury, was developed.

Following their coup of the Guylos Empire, the Neo-Zenevas Empire would continue using the Berserk Fury, and even produce their own variant, the Berserk Tyrann. However, it would fade from prominence in the later parts of the war, unable to compete with more advanced Republican Zoids such as the Gairyuki. Wolff himself would upgrade to a uniquely Zenevas custom Energy Liger.

Zoids: Wild features an all new generation of Zoids. Much smaller than previous Zoid types, they have a more organic styling and are ridden rather than piloted. (A similar precedent can be seen in Command Zoids, and small-scale Zoids such as the Saber Lion and Diloforce.)
}}
The Liger Zero is a lion-type Zoid. It was billed as the lead role in two of the five zoids anime series and two manga titles, as well as featuring prominently as a mascot in Hasbro’s marketing campaign, in addition to appearances in video games and other supporting media. All of this has contributed to making the Liger Zero the most recognized Zoid in the english speaking fandom, and an enduring symbol of second generation of the Zoids franchise, effectively becoming what the Gojulas had been during the 1980s.

Overview
The Liger Zero is identified as a lion-type Zoid, and one of many named after the liger, the hybrid offspring resulting from the breeding of a lion with a tigress. Thanks to imprinted genes inherited from the lion father, ligers are the biggest felines that have ever existed, much larger than any lion, tiger, or prehistoric cat, with some specimens weighing in at a staggering 410-550kg (over half a ton.) As lions and tigers do not coexist in the wild, ligers are only born when they are raised together in captivity.

The Liger Zero is a powerful Zoid, with its basic capabilities surpassing those of the Blade Liger. Its signature weapon is its Strike Laser Claw, a melee weapon that channels a golden, plasma-like energy into its claws, enhancing the raw slashing power of its claw swipes and enabling it to smash and shred through even the heaviest of enemy Zoid armour. It also sports respectable firepower, with an AZ 208mm double barrelled Shock Cannon on its chest, and an AZ 108mm High Density beam gun on its tail. Its body has a more organic flexibility compared to other Zoids, making it extremely nimble for its size, and a pair ion boosters on its back and a pair of anti-lift stabilizers on its sides allow it to run at speeds in excess of 300kph. Though lacking the E-Shield of its predecessors, it compensates with more extensive armour coverage.

This Zoid is best known for its ability to use the Changing Armour System to transform and adapt to various combat situations. Compared to its CAS counterparts, the Liger Zero still has a number of advantages; it is the most practical, requiring lower maintenance, with better firepower and protection than the Jager or the X, superior ranged capability to the Schneider, better mobility and close combat skill than the Panzer, and being more compact and efficient than the Phoenix or the Falcon.

Toy release info
Liger Zero is a medium-sized battery-operated kit requiring two AAA batteries. When the model is switched on, it will walk forward at a moderate pace, chomping its jaws; it also has numerous parts that can be manually posed, including its tail, claws, boosters, stabilizers, shock cannon, and the farers on its cheeks and lower jaw. Though it does not share any parts with them, Liger Zero's engineering is very similar to that of earlier feline Zoids such as Shield Liger and Saber Tiger. The kit contains 12 sprues of pre-colored parts, two runners of 24 rubber caps, one pilot, a motor, a translucent cockpit canopy, two head halves, an instruction manual, and a sheet of stickers.

Liger Zero (Tomy, Japan, 2001)
The Japanese release of the kit was molded in off-white and black plastic with painted black, white and gold accents; other parts were molded in pearlescent gold and gunmetal. The kit included red caps, an orange cockpit canopy, and a grey pilot figure. This kit was reissued as part of the New American Release a year later.

Liger Zero (Hasbro, US/Canada, 2002)
This kit was identical to the Japanese release save for its packaging. A version of the base Liger Zero was included with Hasbro's Liger Zero Schneider kit; its armor was a somewhat darker and more pearly shade of white than the previously released version.

Liger Blue Souga (Tomy, Japan, 2006)
Produced as a tie-in for the Zoids Generations storyline published in Dengeki Hobby Magazine and sold as a convention exclusive, the Souga was molded in bright white and dark blue with painted blue, white and gold accents, gold claws and gunmetal weapons. Its caps were bright green, and its cockpit canopy orange.

Liger Red Hiou (Tomy, Japan, 2006)
Red Hiou was also part of the Generations line, and like the Souga was a convention exclusive. Its armor was translucent pink and its understructure red, with silver claws and dark silver weapons and boosters. It included bright blue caps, blue cockpit canopy, and a white pilot figure.

Liger Zero (Academy, Korea, 2010)
Appearances in Non-Model Merchandise
As the mascot of the Hasbro release and the main character in two anime series, Liger Zero was a popular choice for other tie-in merchandise, including the following:
* single-color mini figures included with the Japanese Battle Card game
* trading cards
* gashapon figures of both the naked Liger and the Zoid in its base armor, the latter of which was also included in one of Hasbro's Battle Champion sets
* a die-cast metal action figure
* several Hasbro action figures, including the base white armor, the red armor version of the X, and a translucent Holotech version
* a 1/52 scale electronic action toy with lights and sound
* art statues
* One Blox figures
* Zoids Head figures
* a collectible diorama figure
* keychains
* a plastic drinking cup sold at Burger King restaurants
* stickers included with puzzles and DVDs
* pajama sets
* a bath towel
* a twin-size bed comforter

The Liger Zero was also featured prominently on most of Hasbro's promotional materials.

Appearances in Other Media
Liger Zero is the lead Zoid in Zoids Shirogane no Juukishin Liger Zero, and also appears in all three Zoids Saga games, all three Zoids Versus games, and Zoids Full Metal Clash.

Overview
Zoids: Wild features an all new generation of Zoids. Much smaller than previous Zoid types, they feature a more organic styling and are ridden rather than piloted. (A similar precedent can be seen in Command Zoids, and small-scale Zoids such as the Saber Lion and Diloforce.)

Production
In response to poor toy sales for Zoids: Genesis, the Zoids franchise went into remission and was kept on life support by various lowkey toy releases and media projects such as Kotobukiya's High End Master Model line, Rebirth Century, Zoids: SS, and Zoids: Fields of Rebellion.
